$100,000 New York Stallion Series Draws Field of Eight
New York-breds will be the focus of Mondays card at Saratoga with the $100,000 New York Stallion Series Stakes. Restricted to three-year-old colts or geldings, the race will be contested at a mile and a half on the turf. There is a separate race on the card for fillies.
Topping the field of eight state-bred colts and geldings at 8-5 on the morning line is Mark My Way, a sophomore son of Noonmark bred and owned by Chester and Mary Broman. Trained by Linda Rice and ridden in all five starts by Cornelio Velazquez, he will break from post position seven. He is a two time winner, one of which came against restricted state-bred company, and delivered as the favorite in his most recent outing.
Free Mugatu training sharply at Saratoga
Second choice at 3-1 on the morning line is Free Mugatu, a bay son of Utopia who was purchased for $150,000 as a two-year-old in training. Trained by John Terranova, the colt will have Luis Saez in the irons after a fourth-place finish after a troubled trip in the New York Derby. He was second two starts back in his turf debut and broke his maiden on the Saratoga main track last summer along with a win in the Law Enforcement Stakes.
Mental Iceberg looking for second career win
Gregory DiPrima will send out Mental Iceberg, installed at 4-1 on the morning line. The chestnut gelded son of Freud has gone winless since his debut effort as a juvenile in September. Jose Ortiz was aboard for that winning effort and remains aboard after a fifth place finish against allowance company at Belmont Park in May. He has hit the board twice from five starts this year and will break from post position four.
