2016 Fair Grounds Oaks Contenders
The top three year old fillies, and possible contenders for the Kentucky Oaks, meet in the Fiar Grounds Oaks, and there is more than one in the expected field of eight in with a solid shot. Leading the pack in the morning line odds is Stageplay, who had two wins and a second in the first three races of her career, but who was a well-beaten favorite while racing wide throughout last time in the (G2) Rachel Alexandra. Second choice in the Oaks is 3-1 Land Over Sea, who will break from the outside gate for trainer Doug O'Neill. She only has a maiden win to show for her seven race career, but she has been in the money five other times, all but one of those being graded-stakes events. Of the longer shots, Venus Valentine was the 75-1 upset winner of the Rachel Alexandra, and drops all the way down to 6-1 here, while Adore (5-1) has won handily in her last two efforts over the Fair Grounds dirt.

While the Fair Grounds Oaks has certainly served as a spring board towards the more famed Triple Tiara races consisting of the Kentucky Oaks (Churchill Downs), Blackeyed Susan (Pimlico), and Mother Goose (Belmont), it has become a prestigious race in its own right. Past winners of the race constitute a veritable who’s who including names like Rachel Alexandra, Ashado, Summerly, Silverbulletday, and Tiffany Lass.
The most distinguished Fair Grounds Oaks alum is the 2009 racing phenomenon, Rachel Alexandra. After cruising to an easy front-running score over a sloppy track at Fair Grounds, she went on to win the Kentucky Oaks by a jaw-dropping 20 and one quarter lengths. Two weeks after the Kentucky Oaks, Rachel become the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years. For good measure, she became the first filly ever to win the Woodward Stakes finishing her 2009 campaign undefeated en route to capturing 2009 Horse of the Year honors over Zenyatta who was an unbeaten winner of the Breeder’s Cup Classic. Other Eclipse Award winning graduates of the Fair Grounds Oaks include Proud Spell (2008 3 year-old champion) and Ashado (2004 3 year-old champion and 2005 older mare champion).
