Champion Untapable Kicks Off Season in $350,000 Azeri Stakes
On Saturday at Oaklawn Park, the featured race is the $350,000 Azeri Stakes. The Grade 2 event will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track and has drawn a field of eight fillies and mares.
Champion Untapable headlines the field as the even-money favorite on the morning line for trainer Steve Asmussen. A five-year-old daughter of Tapit bred and owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, she has won nine of her seventeen starts and won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) in 2014 on her way to the Eclipse Award for champion three-year-old. She was second in this race last year and finished her season with one win from six starts. Florent Geroux will be in the irons and they will break from post position seven.
Call Pat trying for two in a row
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Call Pat for trainer Brad Cox. A six-year-old daughter of Lawyer Ron, she is a six-time winner and a multiple graded stakes winner. She made her first start of the year a winning one last time out in the Bayakoa Stakes (G3) and has been training steadily since then. Joe Rocco, Jr. will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from the rail as she goes for her second straight win.
Theogony looking for breakthrough win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 10-1 is Theogony for trainer Mark Casse. A six-year-old daughter of Curlin, she has been on the board in seven of her fifteen starts and will be trying to earn her first graded stakes victory. She was last seen finishing fourth in the Houston Ladies’ Classic Stakes (G3) at Sam Houston in January. Ricardo Santana, Jr. will be aboard and they will break from post three.
