Full Field of Fourteen Ready for $75,000 Tropical Park Derby
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the track will host the 40th running of the $75,000 Tropical Park Derby. Scheduled to be run at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf, the race has drawn a full field of fourteen three-year-old colts and geldings with two additional listed as also-eligible.
Smooth Daddy has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 7-2 for trainer Tom Albertrani. Purchased for $170,000, the sophomore son of Scat Daddy has won two of his thirteen starts and is trying to add a stakes win to his resume. He was last seen finishing third after setting the pace in the Hill Prince (G3) at Belmont and has been training steadily since then. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position nine.
Other Creek a promising star on the rise
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is Other Creek for trainer Arnaud Delacour. The lightly-raced son of Smart Strike has been on the board in five of his six career starts. He has two wins to his credit and will be trying for his first stakes victory. Bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jackson’s Lael Stables, the bay colt was last seen finishing second in the Commonwealth Turf (G3). Julian Leparoux will be aboard for the first time from post two.
Bashart trying to return to winning ways
Also in the field at morning line odds of 10-1 is longshot Bashart for Michael Matz. A bay son of War Front, he was a graded stakes winner as a juvenile but has struggled as a three-year-old to return to winning form. He has hit the board twice from six starts this year and was last seen finishing fifth as the favorite against optional claiming competition. Luis Saez, aboard two races back, will be back in the irons from the outside post.
