Full Field of Fourteen Set for $200,000 Cardinal Handicap
On Saturday at Churchill Downs, the featured race is the 41st edition of the $100,000 Cardinal Handicap. Scheduled to be run at a mile and an eighth on the turf, the Grade 3 race has drawn a full field of fourteen fillies and mares with two additional contenders on the also-eligible list.
I’m Already Sexy has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 and will break from the rail under jockey Calvin Borel. Trained by Wayne Catalano, the dark bay daughter of Ready’s Image is a seven-time career winner with multiple graded stakes victories to her credit. She was last seen finishing fourth but was disqualified and placed fifth in the Goldikova (G2) at Santa Anita. She has won two of her six starts this year.
Royal Fury trying to rebound after poor race last out
Second choice at odds of 5-1 on the morning line is Royal Fury for trainer Brian Lynch. A former claiming competitor, she is trying to earn the first stakes victory of her career and has won five of her twenty-seven starts. A five-year-old bay daughter of Langfuhr, she was last seen finishing seventh after a rough trip in the E.P. Taylor (G1) at Woodbine. Julian Leparoux will be aboard for the first time and they will break from post position fourteen.
Keening trying to earn first graded stakes win
Also in the field at odds of 8-1 is Keening for trainer Charlie Lopresti. A four-year-old daughter of Horse of the Year Curlin, she has been on the board in five of her six starts this year and was last seen finishing fourth against allowance company at Keeneland. She has won three of her twelve starts and will be going for her first stakes victory. Joe Rocco, Jr. will be aboard from post two replacing the recently-retired Rosie Napravnik.
