Full Field of Twelve Turf Fillies Set for $100,000 Chelsea Flower Stakes
On Saturday at Belmont Park, two-year-old fillies will headline the card in the $100,000 Chelsea Flower Stakes. Scheduled to be run at one mile on the Widener Turf Course, the race has drawn a field of twelve with two additional fillies entered for the main track.
Christophe Clement will saddle Miss Chatelaine, the favorite of the fillies entered specifically for the turf at odds of 3-1. Purchased for $200,000 as a yearling, the chestnut daughter of Pulpit delivered handily in her debut with a 2 ¼ length score at Belmont on the turf. Joel Rosario has picked up the mount and will replace Rajiv Maragh who is currently sidelined with an injury. She has been training steadily since her winning debut and will break from post six.
Stakes-placed Margaret Reay still going for maiden score
Margaret Reay has been tabbed as the second choice at morning line odds of 4-1 for trainer Michael Wilson. Bred and owned by Zayat Stables, the two-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile is a maiden from three starts. She was second in her second career start and her turf debut in September and followed that up with a second-place finish in the Miss Grillo (G3). Since that race, she has had a bullet workout and will have Jose Lezcano aboard from post four.
Path taking on winners after a win on turf
Also in the field at morning line odds of 9-2 is Path, a homebred for Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable. Trained by Claude McGaughey, the gray daughter of Tapit is out of the Grade 1 winner Carriage Trail. After a sixth-place finish her career debut on the main track, she rebounded with a narrow win on the turf at Belmont Park last time out as the favorite. Javier Castellano will remain aboard and they will break from post position nine.
