Juvenile Stakes Runners on Display in The Tremont at Belmont Park
The future stars of North American racing will take center stage in Fridays $100,000 Tremont Stakes, a five and a half furlong contest for two-year-olds at Belmont Park. The race will likely serve as a prep race for the premier juvenile graded stakes at Saratoga this summer.
Topping the field as the 9-5 morning line favorite is Chocolate Wildcat, a son of Wildcat Heir. Trained by Jason Servis and scheduled to be ridden by Javier Castellano, the juvenile was last seen breaking his maiden in his debut effort at Gulfstream Park in April. He is a homebred for owner Dennis Drazin, who also campaigned his stakes-winning dam Chocolate Brown with Servis.
Ward sends both top contender and possible longshot
Slight second choice at 2-1 is Wesley Ward’s Bessie’s Boy. The two-year-old son of Smoke Glacken will have John Velazquez in the irons for the first time. He broke his maiden in his first start at Pimlico in April by 3/4 of a length as the heavy favorite. Ward will also send out first-time starter Jamaalaree, a longshot at 8-1 with Abel Lezcano. Ward is regarded as one of the top juvenile conditioners in the country.
First-time starter has a championship pedigree
Also in the field is King Rontos, a $150,000 Keeneland purchase as a yearling for Rontos Racing Stable Corporation and trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Tabbed at 6-1 morning line with Irad Ortiz, Jr. slated to ride, the son of popular stallion Unbridled’s Song is one of two first time starters in the field of five. He is out of the winning Storm Cat mare, Distant Roar.
