Palace Looms Large in $400,000 Vosburgh
On Saturday at Belmont Park, sprinters will take center stage in the $400,000 Vosburgh Stakes. In addition to the purse and the Grade 1 status, the winner will earn an automatic spot in the starting gate of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge series.
Headlining the field of eight at morning line odds of 2-1 is Palace for trainer Linda Rice. A five-year-old son of City Zip, he has won three of his six starts this year and is going for his third consecutive Grade 1 win. Regular rider Cornelio Velasquez will be in the irons and the pair will break from the inside post. Formerly a $20,000 claimer, he has risen the ranks and become one of the premier sprinters in the country.
Happy My Way training sharply since last race
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Happy My Way for trainer Joe Orseno. He was last seen finished second as the favorite behind Palace in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) at Saratoga and has had a bullet workout at Belmont since that race. Joe Bravo, aboard for all five of his starts this year, has retained the mount and the pair will break from post position six. Prior to his last race, he had won three consecutive races.
Zee Bros to make first start for Lukas
D. Wayne Lukas will saddle longshot Zee Bros at morning line odds of 20-1. The four-year-old son of Brother Derek, a $270,000 purchase as a juvenile, is winless from five starts this year and returned stateside in August after beginning the year racing at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates. Joel Rosario will be aboard from post position three for owner Zayat Stables as he goes for his first graded stakes win.
