Safari Calamari Eyeing Third Straight Win in $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes
On Saturday at Fair Grounds, the featured race is the $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes. Restricted to Louisiana-bred fillies and mares, the race will be contested at one mile on the turf and has drawn a field of eight.
Safari Calamari tops the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 for trainer Ron Faucheux. A four-year-old daughter of Half Ours, she is a homebred for Brittlyn Stables and has won five of her nine starts. She will be trying to breakthrough and earn the first stakes victory of her career and is coming into this race off of two consecutive victories against allowance competition. Jose Valdivia, Jr. will be in the irons and they will break from post position six.
Discreetly Grand looking for first stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 7-2 is Discreetly Grand for trainer Ralph Nicks. A four-year-old daughter of Discreetly Mine, she has been on the board in five of her nine starts and will be trying to notch her fourth career victory and first stakes win. She will have to rebound after finishing tenth in the Marie G. Krantz Memorial Stakes last time out. James Graham will be aboard and they will break from the outside post.
Step up in class for Shea's Lil Shug
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Shea’s Lil Shug for trainer Patrick Mouton. A five-year-old daughter of Gigawatt, the bay mare is a six-time career winner and will be stepping back up to stakes competition for the first time since her two-year-old season. She was second in an optional claiming race last time out in her second start of the year. Richard Eramia will be aboard and they will break from post position two.
