Sophomore Fillies Sprint on Turf in the $100,000 Coronation Cup
On Wednesday at Saratoga, turf sprinters will take center stage in the 3rd running of the $100,000 Coronation Cup. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, the five and a half furlong contest will be run over the Mellon Turf Course and has drawn a field of ten.
The slight favorite on the morning line at 7-2 is Recoupe, a bay daughter of Indian Charlie trained by Michael Trombetta. She is scheduled to break from post position six under jockey Rosie Napravnik and will be making her stakes debut. She has won three of her seven lifetime starts and comes out of an optional claiming competition victory at Penn National in July.
United States debut for Stars Above Me (GB)
Stars Above Me (GB) will make her United States debut for Graham Motion and has been tabbed at morning line odds of 5-1. Bred and owned by Elite Racing Club, the sophomore daughter of Exceed and Excel (AUS) will have Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons from post position seven. She will get Lasix for the first time as she attempts to earn her second career victory. She was last seen finishing third against minor stakes company at Newmarket in June.
Elena Strikes heads to the turf for the first time
Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez will team up with a Stonestreet Farm homebred in Elena Strikes, installed at 4-1 on the morning line. She will break from the outside post in the field of ten and will be making her first start on the turf as well as attempting to earn her first stakes victory. As a juvenile, she won at first asking and was third against graded stakes competition. She was last seen going gate to wire on the Belmont main track.
