Valid Back in $150,000 Skip Away Stakes After Near Spill
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the stakes action will kick off with the $150,000 Skip Away Stakes. Carded at a mile and an eighth on the main track, the Grade 3 has drawn a field of six colts and geldings.
Valid has been tabbed as the even-money favorite on the morning line for trainer Marcus Vitali. A six-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, he is an eleven-time winner and a multiple graded stakes winner. He has been on the board in all three starts this year and will be trying to break through and earn his first victory. Last time out, he finished third in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) despite clipping heels and nearly falling down in the stretch. Nik Juarez will be in the irons and they will break from post five.
Well-bred Savoy Stomp looking for first stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Savoy Stomp for trainer Todd Pletcher. A four-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, he was purchased for $875,000 as a yearling and has won three of his eight starts. He will be trying to earn his first black type victory and is stepping back up in class after winning an optional claiming race last time out. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from the outside post.
Step up in class for consistent Team Colors
Also in the field at morning line odds of 7-2 is Team Colors for trainer James Jerkens. A bay son of Street Cry (IRE), he has been on the board in nine of his ten starts and is trying to notch his first stakes victory. He has been on the shelf since winning an optional claiming race in January and has been training forwardly for his second start of the year. John Velazquez will be aboard and they will break from the rail.
